Titus 2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the younger women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the Word of God be not blasphemed.

A Moment In Proverbs: Proverbs 18:4

Proverbs 18:4,
“The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.”

Let’s take a moment to look at the picture painted in this verse.  When I consider “deep waters”; I think of the deep waters that make no noise but they never run dry, they are teaming with treasures of life in the deepest parts. What a perfect example of a life dedicated to the precepts of the LORD.  As we meditate upon His Word and apply it to our lives we have treasures of life in the deepest parts of our hearts.  It’s when we have His Word hiding in our heart that we can overcome sin and we can give an answer to those who question our beliefs and ask about the hope that lies within(see Psalms 119:10-12 and  1Peter 3:15). As we are pressed for answers or confronted with situations that call on wisdom’s advice we find a treasure of information ready to spring forth from the deepest parts of our heart through the leading of the Holy Spirit.  It is He who brings to mind the things we’ve stored deeply in our hearts and it is He who we can thank when the Word of Life is readily available.

Now let us consider the wellspring of wisdom as a “flowing brook”. A flowing brook immediately takes my mind to the first Psalms 1:3, “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” The springs or flowing brook become the spoken words of what lies within; we find life, security, growth and prosperity as we live out our testimony to the Words upon our heart. God’s word flows naturally from our hearts with freedom and healing to those who hear it.  The flowing water is refreshing and cleansing to the hearer and brings life to them as well.
Friends, as you consider His Word today, what pictures reflect in your mind?  Do you have this wellspring living in you?  Do you have the deep treasures of His Word abiding within?

Prayer: Father, with our whole heart we seek thee; let us not wander from your commandments.  We have hidden your word in our hearts so that we will not sin against you.  LORD, teach us your statutes.  We rejoice in the testimonies of your word, they are great treasures to be cherished. LORD, we will meditate upon your precepts and hold them securely in our hearts to be used when you call upon us in times of speaking truth and sharing our testimony. LORD, help us to not forget your word, but keep it ever present in our minds so that we can be flowing brooks of life to those who are thirsty.  LORD, you are the living water that lives within us; thank you for abiding with us.  In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Abiding Still,
