Proverbs 1: 7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
I often hear new mothers say, “If only there was a parenting handbook that came with my baby when I had him/her”. I have even considered the benefit of such a handbook! One day the Lord showed me He had given us such a reference; His Word! Tucked inside the pages of this historic document and spiritual reference we find a practical handbook for how we might live! Every detail of live is covered if only we will search for wisdom! Seek and you shall find! Today’s Moment in Proverbs is taken from chapter one, verse seven. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Take a moment to consider where you first search for answers, how do you respond to correction? If we are wise we will seek the Lord first for every detail of our lives. I can’t tell you how many times He has helped me in the kitchen as I prepared a meal with limited ingredients. He cares about the small details and the large ones. He loves children that commune with Him and seek Him first! How do your children respond to correction? Keep your eyes attentive to their reactions. Our response to correction reveals the inward heart. While only God can change the hearts, He uses the parents to be His hands, voice and living example. We need to prayerfully make adjustments, give instruction, and help our children become aware of the foolishness that is so easily bound up in their hearts.
With much love,
Mrs. Joseph Wood
I love the new look of your website! And you are right - God's word is the first tool we need for parenting! Why do we neglect it for those parenting books in Barnes and Nobles???? Sometimes I think we want more details on how to handle specific situations - yet the Bible shows us that there is not one right way to parent every child. But there are Biblical principles we must always follow and those will look different in each family. Somedays I struggle though with what the right consequence is to fit the crime...that's when I pray for wisdom.

ReplyDeleteThank you for this! I glean another relevance from Prov 1:7 at this time in my life; however, your words on teaching our children is pertinent and a powerful reminder.
