Question: Would you mind sharing what you keep in your first aid kit and why?
Answer: I would love to share. Keep in mind that my first aid kit is always growing as I learn more and more about what God has given us for every good purpose. With that said, I will list the items in our kit below and put explanations by the ones I think might be needed.
Besides our band aids, bandages, tape, gauzes, ace bandage, latex free gloves, scissors, and tweezers, we have the following in our first aid kit. I must confess that I am not big on band aids so I don’t replace them very often.
Charcoal- This is great to use for food poisoning or suspicion if your child decided to eat the ‘pretty fruit’ on an unknown plant. You can read more about it here: http://www.natural-holistic-health.com/the-benefits-of-activated-charcoal/ I buy my Charcoal from Azure Standard; I love shopping with this company! http://www.azurestandard.com/
Tea Tree Oil- one of the first things we put on cuts to keep it free of infection. You can learn more about it by visiting this site: http://www.homeremediesweb.com/tea_tree_oil_health_benefits.php I purchase mine from Melaleuca. Another company that I truly love shopping with. We have been customers of theirs for the last five years. My Joe says that I am not allowed to shop anywhere else for our household products, he loves them too! Now, when my husband has an opinion about where I shop, you know it must be good!
Vinegar of the Four Thieves- diluted to half strength and put in a spray bottle for a natural insect repellent. This is also great to spray on socks and/or cloth when hiking through the woods to keep ticks, chiggers and other pests away. We make our own. I will post the directions to this later next week.
Coconut oil insect repellent- This is one of my children’s favorite repellents. It works great and doesn’t have any unwanted odor. My Beth-Joy wouldn't want to use anything other than the coconut oil insect repellent from Tropical Traditions. Last year was the first season for us to put it to the test and it proved to work amazingly better than anything else we have tried. You can visit them at: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/
Plantain- This is one of my daughter, Beth-Joy’s, favorite herbs. It is great to use for insect bites and/or stings. You can read more about it by visiting: http://www.brighthub.com/health/alternative-medicine/articles/27468.aspx
Sunscreen
Pain a Trate- This is a must have product for sore muscles such as back aches after a long walk caring the baby. Another product we enjoy from Melaleuca
Mel a gel- After we apply tea tree oil we will put mel-a-gel on any wounds. We have found they heal faster and don’t have problems with infections. This is also from Melaleuca.
Antibacterial wipes- Don’t over use antibacterial soap. I believe that anytime we overdo something, even good things, we can find that it causes problems. Again, we get ours from Melaleuca.
I don’t like using over the counter pain killers. For our family of 12 it may seem surprising but we don’t even use a full bottle of pain killers a year. First, we seldom get hurt and secondly, I really try to find other methods of relief, using pain medicine as a last resort.

A Moment in M.O.M.'s Kitchen- Popcorn
Last night Jed, Bekah and I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning painting the home. It was an important time to accomplish as much as we could with all the little ones fast asleep. Bekah requested some popcorn and Jed started sharing how his friends thought our popcorn was the best. I am not sure what we do that is so different than others except the oil we use. We enjoy the many health properties of Coconut Oil, it is my main oil of use here in our home. Popcorn is a frequent snack and treat in our home. On special occasions my Joe will make his recipe of his caramel popcorn. I have posted that in the past here on the Blog. Enjoy!
Popcorn
Large stock pan
1/4 popcorn
2 heaping Tbs of Coconut oil
Sea Salt
Heat your oil, then add your popcorn. As it pops make sure you lift the lid to let the steam out from time to time. I have found this keeps it from becoming "rubbery". Shake periodically till popping slows down. I normally call it done once I can't count to three in between the pops. Then sprinkle with some sea salt and put in bowls for the family to enjoy. At times I have to make a few recipes to feed my hungry troops!
We get our Coconut Oil from Tropical Traditions. If you would like to learn more you can visit their site at: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/what_is_virgin_coconut_oil.htm
Have a wonderful weekend with your families friends! I will probably be finishing up painting here in the house and enjoying popcorn at story time with the children!

A Moment with M.O.M.- Virgin Coconut Oil
Virgin Coconut Oil
How it has changed people's lives, and how it can change yours!
Brian and Marianita Jader Shilhavy
If the sound of Carrot Ginger Vichyssoise, African Vegetable Stew and Coconut Flour Brownies (Gluten Free), awakens your taste buds you don't want to miss this resource! However, if it awakens your curiosity then you really shouldn't miss this resource! In a day when diseases are growing resistant to the typical medical approach and epidemics are on the horizon we all need to read, Virgin Coconut Oil- How it has changed people's lives and how it can change yours! The author writes, "Outside of a human mother's breast milk, coconut oil is nature's most abundant source of lauric acid and medium chain fatty acids." The authors reference several respectable leaders in health and nutrition such as Dr. Joseph Merola, The Weston Price Foundation and Mary Enig to list a few. Mary Enig Ph. D shares that a diet rich in lauric acid from human breast milk or coconut oil forms a monoglyceride called monolaurin, which has been shown to destroy several bacteria and viruses. Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil is a favorite in my home kitchen; in fact it is the only oil we use! For the last three years, we have experienced increased health, energy and resistance to common illnesses that we have been exposed too. In the book, Virgin Coconut Oil- How it has changed people's lives and how it can change yours! The author's life experience and personal relationship with God are clearly seen; not neglecting a personal invitation to Christ! Brian and Marianita share a healthy balance of statistics, personal testimonies, and recipes to make this book a resource you will return to for reference and encouragement time and time again!
